Professor Ian Ruthven, University of Strathclyde: Resonance and the Experience of Relevance

Abstract. In this presentation, I will consider the concept of resonance as a useful one for thinking about what it means to experience relevance when interacting with information. Drawing on theories from marketing, cultural studies and information design I will argue that resonance has different properties to the more traditional interpretation of relevance and those properties can be used to reimagine how to present information in personalised information systems and how to think about what we are evaluating when assessing the success of personalisation.
